At the Manitoba Down Syndrome Society, we understand that learning your child has Down syndrome can bring a wave of emotions - and we want you to know that you are not alone. From the moment your baby arrives, MDSS is here to welcome your family, connect you with others who understand, and provide the support and resources you need.
MDSS provides Manitoba hospitals with our Labour of Love Packages, which are given to new parents of babies diagnosed with Down syndrome. Inside, you'll find an offer of a one-year free MDSS membership, along with information about our Visiting Parents Program and the many ways our community can support your family.
Sometimes, the most comforting thing is hearing from a parent who has been in your shoes.
When new parents reach out to our office to request a visit, our Visiting Parents Coordinator connects your family with an experienced MDSS parent who truly understands the many emotions you may be feeling. Your visiting parent may even bring their own child with Down syndrome along - so you can see firsthand the joy, personality, and potential that lies ahead.
Your visiting parent will share how MDSS has made a difference in their family's life, help you activate your free membership, and invite you to connect with other new families at our next Baby Love gathering.
To request a Visiting Parent, contact the MDSS office.
Our Baby Love Gatherings are one of our most cherished programs - a warm, welcoming space where families of babies and young children with Down syndrome come together to connect and celebrate.
Held each Spring and Fall, these events feature entertainment and activities for the little ones, refreshments, and the chance to meet other families who are on a similar journey. Often, older youth and young adults from our community volunteer at these events - offering a beautiful glimpse into the bright futures ahead for your child.
