Physical activity and recreation are essential parts of a healthy, happy, and fulfilling life - for individuals with Down syndrome at every age and stage. Whether it's joining a sports team, learning to swim, or exploring the arts, recreation builds confidence, develops skills, fosters friendships, and supports both physical and mental well-being.
This page is here to help you find inclusive recreation opportunities in Manitoba and across Canada for individuals with Down syndrome.
MDSS is proud to offer our very own Active Youth Program in Winnipeg - designed specifically for youth with Down syndrome between the ages of 9 and 17. Through fun, inclusive programming, participants build physical literacy skills, develop confidence in sport and recreation, and form meaningful friendships with peers.
Building physical literacy from a young age sets the foundation for a lifetime of healthy movement. Early intervention programs like physiotherapy and occupational therapy can support motor development in young children.
When movement is fun, it becomes a habit. Try swimming, dancing, walking, cycling, yoga, or team sports - and follow your loved one's interests and energy.
Programs like Special Olympics and Swimmingly offer supportive, structured environments where individuals with Down syndrome can develop skills and thrive alongside peers.
Speak with your loved one's doctor or physiotherapist about any health considerations specific to Down syndrome, including atlantoaxial instability, which may affect participation in certain high-impact activities.
Recreation is about joy, growth, and connection - not just performance. Celebrate effort, participation, and the friendships that come with being active.
