Every parent has the same concern, protecting and safeguarding their children. Although the concern is the common bond between all parents, the method(s) they choose is typically different, particularly because kids are all different and require different oversight. Real-time GPS trackers, engineered as lightweight wrist watches, have been helping parents in a number of different ways. One of these ways is through an alert process that will send mom or dad a text message or email if the child with Down syndrome (or any other condition) wanders off. With a cool little feature known as the geographical fence, parents can set up a safe zone via the web-based satellite image program. If the child ever steps foot outside this safe zone barrier an alert is instantly sent to the parent. This can help the parent quickly locate the child before they get lost, hurt, or go missing.

Once a parent makes the decision to have their child wear a GPS wristwatch all they have to do is go online to view historical or real-time locational data. Since the web-based application can be viewed by mobile phone, PC or tablet system, anyone with access to the user name and password can view the tracking data.

GPS tracking systems designed as wristwatches for children with Down Syndrome or any other condition, illness or cognitive disorder can invest in the personal tracker devices for as low as $339.00 per tracker. Security versions of the wristwatch are also available for $359.00, and provide a locking mechanism that stops a child from taking the tracker off their wrist without the assistance of a parent or caretaker.

Conference brochures will be emailed to members and sent to schools soon – save the date; November 3rd, 2014.  Thanks to Lori Lester for coordinating this important event for families and educators.

As we prepare for another SEE ME BEAUTIFUL conference in November, we would like to request pictures for the 2014 SMB Slide Show.

Photos are required for the SMB Conference! Please send pictures of your kids having fun, doing things they like to do, and just being themselves. Posed pictures are always nice and I certainly would use them but I really want to show our conference guest’s pictures of children with Down syndrome participating in games, sports, hobbies, play, etc. Do you have any you would like to share with me?

Digital images can be e-mailed to me at joanik@gmail.com.  Please note my email for SMB photos is different this year.

We are accepting photos up to October 20. If you have not completed a consent form for MDSS use of a photograph, you can print one off our website and send it in with the pictures.

MDSS has had a number of parents contact us for materials on sexuality and relationships that they could use to teach their youth.  MDSS has recently acquired two sex education DVDs, one called Jason's Private World, and the other called Kylie's Private World.  They come from Life Support Productions in the United Kingdom. You can visit their website at www.lifesupportproductions.co.uk and request a password to preview the videos.  Once you preview the videos, you can request to borrow the DVD's through Mina in the office and choose which parts you want to use with your child.  MDSS would appreciate feedback from parents who choose to use the videos.

It is time to start thinking about our September 28th Buddy Walk already!  Time to start strategizing about all the friends and relatives that might be willing to come out and walk in support of your child, and ask them to save the date.  Think outside the box - classmates and their parents, outside activity friends (dance, soccer, Special Olympics, etc.) and their families.  Workmates, aunts, uncles, cousins and anyone else you can think of.  Tell them how much fun the day is, and that they won't want to miss the live entertainment by Luke and Murray and Fred Penner, the activities for the children, the cupcakes and pizza, and whatever else you love about the Buddy Walk.  Thanks to Angie Baydack and Dustin Sigvaldason for agreeing to coordinate our major fundraiser for 2014.

 Buddy Walk Volunteers Needed !

We are looking for more people to take on a small role in making the event as awesome as it has been in the past.   Although we have a great committee and many roles are filled, we still need people to organize one station along the walk, find and assign volunteers, organize a silent auction, organize a 50/50 draw, look after promotion.

Please consider one of the above tasks, and let Mina know if there is any way you can assist.

MDSS members really rocked Down Syndrome Awareness Day on March 21st!  Here are some of the ways our members increased awareness that day.

Throughout the month of March, and particularly on March 21st, the Manitoba Down Syndrome Society’s Facebook page was increasingly abuzz with posts for World Down Syndrome Day. Thanks to MDSS board Member Olivia Hawrysh for finding and posting both local and national stories and photos. Many of those stories were shared by MDSS followers, and shared again by their friends. So much positive awareness was generated this month…it was incredibly exciting to participate! Citi FM gave World Down Syndrome Day a shout out, Ruth Joseph and her mom did an awareness spot on CJOB’s Sunday morning radio program “Your Life, Unlimited with Stephanie Staples”, and Carole Beaudry was interviewed on air with Kim Roy-Grenier, reporter at Radio-Canada/Manitoba.

MDSS Buddy Night Coordinator, Karen Pfeifer, told us a wonderful story of a Random Act of Kindness;  "As 23 of us gathered in our reserved area at McDonald's and got settled with organizing the varied meal choices, the participants met each other with hugs and high fives. When we got to the meal counter to place the order, the manager was on the phone with someone and he came over to talk to us. He informed us that a man on the phone would be paying for the total cost of our meals! Apparently the man had been in the restaurant earlier and had noticed our group.   Such a wonderful surprise from an anonymous, generous person!"

Thank you so much to this awesome gentleman.  Another illustration of how wonderful the human spirit can be.  To you, whoever you are, your thoughtfulness and generosity are appreciated greatly by the members of the Manitoba Down Syndrome Society!

A message from Community Living Winnipeg;

Abilities Manitoba is launching a campaign to let the Minister of Family Services know there is growing concern for the safety, well being and quality of life of Manitobans with intellectual disabilities. The Minister is being asked to:

Establish an inclusive planning process to ensure the long-term sustainability of services upon which so many now depend.

Ensure that planning fully incorporates the voices of persons with intellectual disabilities, their families, as well as service agencies, their employs and the public

Provide immediate support to those agencies already facing serious financial challenges in maintain basic services.

Take measures needed to provide reasonable wages for agency employees who are among the lowest paid human service workforces in Manitoba

Ensure that other funding decisions made in the short term do not diminish the quality, scope and viability of current services

Community Living Winnipeg is a member of Abilities MB and supports this campaign. We are asking our members, families and concerned citizens to also demonstrate their support in what we are asking the minister.

6th Annual Buddy Walk a Huge Success!

What do you get when you mix our amazing member families, their friends, a sunny day, entertainment, prizes, pizza, outstanding corporate and personal sponsorships, and a walk through the beautiful Assiniboine Forest at this beautiful time of year?

You get the 6th Annual MDSS Buddy Walk - an inspiring and fun afternoon that generated more than $30,000.00 to support the work of the Manitoba Down Syndrome Society and the Canadian Down Syndrome Society!

Hat's off to Jaxon Budd and his family.  Total pledges collected by this family alone were close to $4500.00!

And kudos to Jesse Pfeifer and his family for bringing the most buddies to this year's event.  Jesse had 54 walkers on his team!

It was so much fun seeing the creative ways some groups used to identify their team members, including halos, t-shirts, and silly hats.  For the kids and the young at heart, there were many mascots and clowns roaming the site, along with wonderful face painting.

Midlife Kyrsis rocked the tent, donating their time and talent to the event.  As well, 103.1 Virgin Radio was on site promoting the event, and Lloyd The Intern (LTI) came out to emcee for us.

All profits from pizza sales of Domino's pizza were donated back to the event by this sponsor.

Along the 3 km walk, children, adults, and even the dogs, were able to pick up treats at our seven stations!  Once back on site, participants were treated with delicious cupcakes, followed by draws for our many raffle prizes and 50/50 prizes.

Such a large scale event would not be possible without the generous donations of time, talent, and sponsorship of many, many people and businesses.

First, to our major corporate sponsors - Pet Valu, Ladco Company Limited, E-L Drilling, and Bison Transport, and to our many other sponsors and donors, we extend our sincere gratitude to you for supporting our cause.  We encourage our members and their families to check out the sponsorship page and support these businesses!

Second, thank you to our volunteer committee members, most of whom worked tirelessly for months to ensure that the 6th Buddy Walk would be the great success it was.  It takes real teamwork to put on an event of this scale.  To the 2013 Buddy Walk Committee members, you did an outstanding job!  Under the leadership of Debbie Hodges, the following people made up the committee: Ken Hodges, Norine Hodges, Karen Pfeifer, Maria Pereira, Dennis Lafreniere, David Carr, Carol Yaschuk, Val Surbey, Mina Orchard, Lorraine Baydack, Laurie Jackson, Colleen Evans, Alex Goodman.

Thanks also to all the volunteers that came out the day of the event to ensure that things ran smoothly.

Visit the web site again in the next couple of weeks for photos of the event and a complete list of volunteers.

MDSS wishes to acknowledge Debbie Hodges for her tireless effort as Buddy Walk chair over the last two years.  She has decided to step down, and MDSS is looking for a new coordinator and committee members for our 2014 Buddy Walk.  Please call or email the office if you can help out...we need a committee chair and committee members in order to go ahead with a walk next year.

In November 2006, Lisa’s Saturday Night Livewires was established.  The creation of Livewires was in response to the wishes of Lisa Mitchell, a beautiful young member who had passed away that year.  Lisa wanted MDSS to create a social club for individuals with Down syndrome, and we parents needed a venue for socialization for our kids!  Lisa's  amazing friends fundraised specifically to fund such a program!

The 2013-2014 season sees Livewires still going strong, meeting twice monthly.  The teens are now wonderful young adults.  The mandate for Livewires remains the same - for young people to have an opportunity to ‘hang out’ on a Saturday night, withNO PARENTS ALLOWED!

We are now seeking TWO GIRLS BETWEEN THE AGES OF 19 AND 24 to join the group.  Please contact the office (mdss@mymts.net or 204-992-2731) ASAP if you are interested in your daughter trying out the program.   Upcoming meetings are on the October 5th and the 12th, November 2nd and 9th, and December 5th at Church of the Way on Lilac Street. Cost to families is $150.00 per year, with a current MDSS membership.

PLEASE NOTE:  If you have a younger teen, and are interested in starting up a new group for them, MDSS is more than pleased to provide a budget, and help you get things up and running.  Contact Mina at the office to get the ball rolling.
